Two pythons crash through ceiling while mating

Image
Two giant pythons crashed through the ceiling of a house while mating on the roof. The owners of the house, who reside in Cairns, Australia, were horrified to watch the giant snakes tumbling down from the roof while still intertwined. They called local snake catchers to help them remove the breeding pair, Daily Mail Australia reports. The mating pythons had managed to hide under the roof of the couple’s house in Australia’s Cairns, but they soon caused a crack in the ceiling due to their energetic activity, much to the horror of the family living inside. Snake catchers Matt Hagan and Jason Legg were called to remove the pythons. When they arrived, they discovered two scrub pythons, with a combined weight of about 40kg, while each is five-metre long. Said the snake catchers, “A Whiterock couple were shocked to see their ceiling flex and crack under the weight of these 4-5m Amethystine pythons, also referred to as scrub pythons. “Extracting this dynamic duo was no

Beijing says China stepping up U.S. soy imports, yet to show up in U.S. data

Image
state media said on Sunday the United States has shipped several million tonnes of soybeans to China since the two countries’ leaders met in June, although U.S. government data shows that the volume was much less. The U.S.-China trade war has curbed the export of U.S. crops to China, with soybean sales falling sharply after Beijing slapped tariffs of 25% on American cargoes. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) data shows that just 1.02 million tonnes of soybeans were shipped to China for the period starting from the G20 meeting June 28 to the week ended July 18, the most recent date for which data is available. These shipments reflect purchases made earlier this year, and the USDA is expected to release new data this week. But state broadcaster CCTV, citing China’s National Development and Reform Commission and Ministry of Commerce, said China has made enquiries to U.S. suppliers for the purchase of soybeans, cotton, pork, sorghum and other agricultural produ

Egan Bernal becomes first Colombian to win Tour de France

Image
Egan Bernal became the first Colombian to win the Tour de France when he retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey after Sunday’s 21st and final stage won by Caleb Ewan of Australia. The 22-year-old Bernal, the youngest rider to win the race in 110 years, gave Team Ineos — formerly Team Sky — their seventh title in the past eight editions. He beat teammate and defending champion Geraint Thomas of Britain with Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk coming home third. Also the winner of the white jersey for the best Under-25 rider, Bernal did not win a single stage, but he was first at the top of the Col de l’Iseran when the 19th stage was stopped because of hailstorms and landslides in the Alps. Kruijswijk’s Jumbo-Visma team shone throughout the race, winning four stages through Dylan Groenewegen, Wout van Aert, Mike Teunissen and the team time trial. Briton Adam Yates failed to impress but his Mitchelton-Scott team also claimed four stages. Yates’ twin brother Sim

Basketball: Lin fears that NBA has ‘kind of given up

Image
More than one billion dollars in contracts were agreed to in the first 24 hours of the NBA’s new league year, but free agency isn’t a feeding frenzy for all players. “Every year it gets harder,” free-agent point guard Jeremy Lin said of his uncertain NBA future. “In English there’s a saying and it says once you hit rock bottom, the only way is up,” an emotional Lin said as part of a motivational speech in Taiwan for Christian outlet GOOD TV. “But rock bottom just seems to keep getting more and more rock bottom for me. So, free agency has been tough. Because I feel like in some ways the NBA’s kind of given up on me.” Lin, 30, won a championship with the Toronto Raptors this past season after a midseason trade, but he averaged just 3.4 minutes in eight total playoff appearances. “After the season I had to get ready for this Asia trip and it was the last thing I wanted to do,” Lin said. “Because I knew for six weeks I would have to just put on a smile. I would ha

Grab commits $2 billion to Indonesia with SoftBank’s backing

Image
Asian ride-hailing firm Grab on Monday said it will invest $2 billion into Indonesia over five years using capital from Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp, marking its biggest commitment in the region’s most populous market. The investment will go toward creating a next-generation transportation network and transforming how critical services, like healthcare, are delivered, Grab said in a statement. The push is likely to intensify rivalry with Indonesia’s Go-Jek. The two tech startups compete in several Southeast Asia markets, but Indonesia is widely seen as holding most promise due to its youthful, internet-savvy population of 260 million. Singapore-headquartered Grab and Go-Jek have evolved from ride-hailing app operators to becoming one-stop shops for services as varied as making payments and food delivery. On Monday, Grab said it will invest with SoftBank to create a transport network for Indonesia based on electric vehicles and develop geo-mapping technolog

Image
Iran’s foreign policy is to protect multilateralism and confront American hegemony, Iranian Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri said on Monday, according to the IRIB news agency. Iran and the United States came to the brink of war last month after the Islamic Republic shot down a U.S. drone, nearly prompting a retaliatory attack which U.S. President Donald Trump called off at the last minute.

Egypt to form panel to amend VAT law, finance minister says

Image
Egypt will form a committee to amend its value-added tax law, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait told reporters on Monday, without specifying what the changes may be. The VAT law is part of a reform program that formed the basis of a $12 billion, three-year loan agreed with the International Monetary Fund in 2016. It replaced a sales tax and broadened the tax base in a country where the government struggles to collect income tax because of a large informal economy and widespread avoidance. Maait said the government collected 660 billion Egyptian pounds ($39.83 billion) in taxes in the 2018-2019 financial year, up 16.6% from the previous year at 566 billion Egyptian pounds. Of total tax revenue collected in the 2018-2019 financial year, 309 billion Egyptian pounds came from VAT, the minister said. The VAT, currently at 14%, is a composite tax levied on the difference between the cost price and the sale price of domestic and imported goods.
