Golf has huge prospect for development in Nigeria, says Peter Aneke






Former Board member of the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), Peter Aneke has said that the country embodies one of the biggest potential for the game to develop on the continent.

“I have played the game for over 36 years of my life and most of my friends and healthy habits I have were picked through the game. With the drive, I see the current team of the Golf Federation run, there are great developments for the game in the horizon,” he said.

Aneke, who plays off 20 handicap, feted golfers at his 70th birthday tournament at Ikeja Golf Club in Lagos, where over 100 players were in attendance.

He said golf has been instrumental to keeping him mentally alert and fit at his age, adding, “Every time I set out on the course, it engages every aspect of my being and that is one of the reasons I love it. I can say the same for most people I see on the golf course, which accounts for why a lot of people who care for their physical and mental health are attracted to the game.”

Captain of the Club, Jolomi Ideh added the club has also been investing in a lot of youth development programme, which compliments that effort of the Golf Federation.According to him, “We have quite a number of initiatives at the club to encourage kids and youthful players who are interested in taking up the game.

The yearly AWA Ibrahim youth championship that has been a flagship event for the national youth golf development has been hosted at the Ikeja Golf Club. All these are because of the huge support and positioning of the club as a youth friendly center for the game’s development.”

Top among golfers that graced the one-day golf birthday tourney to honour Aneke included the President of Ikeja Golf Club, AWA Ibrahim, former captains of the Club, Clement Onyeyiri, Akin Areola, Commodore Tokunbo Ajomale among others. Ted Iwere, former captain of the golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938 also graced the event.

After rain delay, Ade Olaiya picked the best net at the event with 31 net, beating Fidelis Onyeyiri and Henry Okpe to the second and third places respectively, while Bidemi Ojo won the gross prize.

Chichi Alamu and Lynda Obieze were the star lady players in the net category.The event was adjudged over nine-hole play.
